Remarque magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary
by Linda Johnson & Alberto Fernandez | Monday, Aug 01, 2022The 2022 edition of Remarque, the Visual Annual of Florida Atlantic University is hot off the presses. The journal, produced by a team of dedicated graphic design students, showcases the creative work of FAU students majoring in architecture, graphic design, studio art, and film, video and new media. “This year's issue is special because it marks ten years of showcasing and publishing students' work!” said BFA student Jordi Ducran. "Behind it all is a group of wonderful people with an energy exciting enough to match a circus."
The journal is produced by the FAU Fort Lauderdale-based student club Remarque-Designers’ Edge, which is open to students from all majors who have an interest in creative visual work or learning about magazine production. Award winning designer Joel Nakamura known for his distinctive illustration style was the guest juror for this 10th anniversary edition. Nakamura lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico and his work was featured at the opening and closing ceremonies for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. This year’s edition features over 50 juried works by FAU students.
Stephanie Cunningham, a professor of graphic design who serves as Remarque’s faculty advisor, was impressed with the students' determination to produce the issue while balancing the demands of their final semester and preparation for graduation. Layout editor, Jordi Ducran said "We jumped through flaming hoops, walked on tight ropes and juggled a million things at once. All of this while being stared down by a lion with it’s cage open: in other words, life leading up to and post-graduation. However, amidst the chaos, we kept sight of what it means to be a team. We spent months communicating and collaborating. Now, we celebrate the hard work our peers have put forth. We celebrate what it means to create and this journal is your invitation to join us in doing so."
